Today Lpod returned to the Salish Sea for the first time this season and it was amazing to see our beloved friends again :) We got a report early in the morning that Orcas had been spotted East of Trial Island heading West. As we thought they were probably Transient Orcas heading to Race Rocks, we decided to head there first to show our guests the amazing wildlife that can be found at this Ecological Reserve. We wanted to show our guests Race first as we stay outside of the reserve any time Orcas head in there. We got to see lots of Harbor Seals, Sea Lions and Elephants Seals plus our Resident Sea Otter :) Then we headed off towards the Orcas and were trying to get ID’s when we came across a Mother & Calf and soon realized that we had Resident Orcas!!!! Not long after that the excitement grew even more as we realized we had in fact got Lpod in the Salish Sea for the first time in 2016 and all right off Victoria :) The Mother & Calf we first came across were identified as L91 “Muncher” and her very first Calf L122, who was born in 2015, part of last years “Baby Boom”! Both Mom & Baby looked very happy and healthy and it was so good to see them again. Other Orcas identified included L47 “Marina” who is the Mother of L91 and was born in 1974. We also identified L92 “Crewser”, a male born in 1995. The Orcas were spread out right across the Strait, which is very typical of Lpod and I could see Orcas in every direction. It was such an incredible feeling seeing them once again!
