This afternoon we had an Epic Humpback Encounter! We were a little south of Constance Bank watching Big Mama & her Calf. The calf seemed to be feeding on Mom’s milk when we first arrived. Suddenly and unexpectedly Big Mama flicked her enormous tail in the air. Then we witnessed several breathtaking breaches from the calf, a “baby breach” It was a magical moment watching this precious baby breach over and over, obviously happy it had a full belly! There was ourselves & one other boat to witness this unforgettable moment and then as another boat arrived the baby stopped breaching. We did see it lift out it’s pectoral fin in the air and also tail fluke several times. All of us were awe struck at what we had just witnessed!
This is “Big Mama’s” 6th Calf that we know of that she has brought to the Salish Sea and it is amazing to see this wonderful Humpback with yet another baby. When she brings these babies to our local waters, she seems to take her time in teaching the baby all the best feeding spots. We then see the babies return when they are older.
We also visited Race Rocks and checked out the Sea Lions & Seals hanging out at the Ecological Reserve. A number of Northern Elephant Seals were hanging out at the boat ramp as well.
What an incredible and unforgettable experience we had today, truly epic!
