Today we had an incredible Humpback encounter both in the morning and afternoon with a total of 4 Humpbacks :)

The highlight was watching “Big Mama” lunge feed in the morning, it was a breathtaking experience! We had been sat for a while watching Big Mama & her Calf play around and it looked like the Calf was feeding on Mama’s milk. Suddenly the water exploded as Big Mama appeared from no where and lunged to the surface to swallow a large amount of bait fish. As she was only 100 yds from our boat, I managed to get some great shots of her open mouth showing the baleen in fantastic detail :) The Calf was being playful and rolled on its side, tail fluked several times and just seemed to be having fun!

In the afternoon we encountered two different Humpbacks, the first one looked like a juvenile Humpback that we encountered near Becher Bay. As we arrived on scene the Humpback was feeding in a tide line and doing lots of tail fluking as it went down to feed. I will be sending my pictures to some local Humpback experts to try and get an identification on this animal and also the one we found a few miles south of Race Rocks. The one south of Race Rocks was a much larger animal with a scar on its tail fluke that should make identification easy. That made a total of 4 different Humpbacks today and we think there may have been at least another couple out there as the Humpback Comeback continues!

We also got to spend some quality time at Race Rocks looking at all the the Harbor Seals (many looking extra fat as they are pregnant with Pups), Steller & California Sea Lions, Elephant Seals and the Sea Otter :)
