Today we had a T-party with a large group of Transient Orcas in Haro Strait during our morning & afternoon tours! In the morning the Orcas had been reported by someone fishing near Spieden Island and we along with another boat picked them up near Battleship Island. We soon realized we had the same group of Transients as yesterday plus a few more. In fact at the end of the day we counted a total of about 20 Orcas including the T36A’s, T65A’s. T99’s plus T93 & T97 :) The Orcas were being very social all day with lots of breaching, spyhops, tail slaps and cart wheels observed. They really were having a T-Party!
In the morning we watched them move east towards Roche Harbor at the top of San Juan Island. We watched them continue East towards San Juan Channel and decided to take the scenic way home past Roche Harbor and Mosquito Pass, which was a real treat! Our guests also got to see a Sea Lion, Harbor Seals and Bald Eagles this morning.
As we left the Harbour in the afternoon, we were not 100% sure where we would have to travel to encounter the Orcas again. Thankfully they did us a huge favour and instead of heading down San Juan Channel, or moving further east, they traveled back west and we picked them up near Battleship again. We watched the Orcas travel across Haro strait and then start moving north towards Swanson Channel, again being very social and active the entire time!
Both in the morning & afternoon we got to watch Dr. Lance Barrett-Lennard and his team from Vancouver Aquarium deploying a drone to take aerial shots of the Transient Orcas. This team has special permits to allow them to do this important work for research and have a trained/licensed pilot flying the drone.
It was a very special day on the water!
