Today we had a very playful group of Transient Orcas in Haro Strait :) The Orcas had been heard early in the morning on the hydro-phones on San Juan Island but had not been seen. We headed out at 10am and coordinated the search with other boats leaving Victoria & the San Juan’s. As we headed up Haro Strait we got word that the Orcas had been spotted near Halibut Island heading south :) When we got on scene the Orcas were now south of Sidney Island and continuing south. The Transient’s were identified as the T99’s, T36A’s, T93 & T97, about 15 Orcas in total. They were being very active & social while we were on scene and we got to see Spyhops, a breach, tail slaps, pectoral waves and tail lobs whilst we followed them. We think they may have killed a Porpoise as we saw several Harbor Porpoise in the area and one group in particular was sticking close to the shore line of Sidney Island moving away from the Orcas as fast as they could. Harbor Porpoise & Harbor Seals are the two favourite prey of Transient Orcas but they will attack Dall’s Porpoise, Sea Lions, Elephant Seals and even Baleen Whales such as Minke Whales! Apart from the Orcas and Porpoise we did see a large number of Harbor Seals at the Chain Islets as well as Bald Eagles.
