April 29th - Humpback Mom & Calf!

Today we had a wonderful encounter with "Big Mama" & Calf near Kellett Bluffs. We had heard the day before that one of our favourite Humpback Whales had been spotted in the area and had a brand new calf with her :) This is the 6th (at least) Calf she has brought to the Salish Sea and the baby seemed very healthy. "Big Mama" was the first documented Humpback to return to the Salish Sea about 15 years ago, after most Humpbacks in the area had been wiped out by commercial whaling... She has been the spearhead of the "Humpback Comeback" and we now have a catalogue of over 80 Humpbacks that have been seen in the Salish Sea!
