Today we encountered two groups of Transient Orcas by James Island! The Orcas were identified as the TO49A’s and TO123’s and we caught up with them at the bottom end of James Island in Sidney Channel. A report had come in earlier that day that some blows & a breach/splash had been seen near Darcy Island from Land. However, despite boats in the area looking no one found the Orcas until much later in the day when they were picked up by Halibut Island. It worked perfectly for our 1pm tour and as we got nearby we heard the Orcas had turned south towards us, awesome We had a great time watching these two pods socialize and play together, and though we did see Seals nearby, no signs of them making a kill! Transient Orcas are also known as Bigg’s Killer Whales after well known Researcher, Michael Bigg. Apart from the Orcas and the Seals (their favourite prey), we also say Steller Sea Lions, Harbor Porpoise & Bald Eagles! What a wonderful day in the Salish Sea
